Paul Abernathy grew up in Charlottesville, VA and quickly became a regional leader in the electrical field when entering the Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center in 1987. He was voted by his peers and instructors as the # 1 student in the history of the school ( All Trades ) and with 100% attendance also during this same year he won the VICA Electrical Award for electrical excellence. In 1988 he graduated with honors and spent his final year as the electrical instructor to the 1st year students which was a first in the schools history to allow a student to actually teach lower class students, To date no other student has been given this honor and earned the respect of their peers while still in school. Much of Paul's success in the electrical business was due to Paul's mentor Robert Barrett, the electrical instructor at the vocational school and fellow Master Electrician Todd Abernathy (his brother). If it can be done Paul's brother has installed it, repaired it or created it and taught it to Paul.
In 1988-89, Paul became the " Youngest " ( only 18 years old ) licensed electrician in the State of Virginia and started Double A Electrical with his brother Todd. In 1990-91, Paul moved his family to Harrisonburg, Virginia where he current resides but along the way in 2000 he became an NEC® Instructor for a local community college and taught classes on Understanding the National Electrical Code, NEC® Code Changes , Grounding and Bonding Principles and Basic Electrical Theory.
Mr. Abernathy was one of the early home inspectors in Virginia even before they considered it home inspections, back in 1988 he conducted his first home inspection and from their started doing inspections on a " request " basis until which time he decided in 1999 to add it to his current business as a full fledged business segment, to date he has conducted over 3,500 professional electrical and home inspections.
Paul has over 18 years of experience in teaching and real life experience as a master electrician and seasoned home inspector and certified ICC & IAEI residential electrical inspector as well as a National Speaker on many topics from Home Improvements, Electrical Training, Home Inspection Training and National Electrical Code and can cater a speaking topic around just about any classification. In 2005, Paul joined NACHI® after speaking with someone within the company and felling it was a perfect fit for his business model and upon joining fast became a part of the online scene offering his expert experience as an Electrician and Electrical Educator to help broaden the knowledge of electricity to home inspectors nationwide . In a very short time Paul became a educator and electrical consultant to many online education projects as well as speaking nationally to the home inspection industry on a wide range of topics.
